Sweet and sour onions

I'm not sure where exactly this recipe comes from, and I've found versions of it throughout Middle Eastern cooking. This beautifully simple dish is great on its own as a salad or used as a condiment in a picnic or family dinner.

Sweet and sour onions

ingridients

  • 500g (1lb) pearl onions, peeled

  • 3-4 Tbsp olive oil

  • 3 Tbsp white wine vinegar

  • 1 Tbsp sugar

  • 2 Tbsp sultanas

  • Salt and pepper

  • 2 tsp dried mint (optional)

Method

  • Heat the oil in a medium-low pan and add the onions. Saute gently for five minutes or until starting to brown all over

  • Add the rest of the ingredients and a little water

  • Cook gently until soft

  • Serve
